On a bender with Gordon Comstock in Orwell’s Keep the Aspidistra Flying

Gordon Comstock has resigned from his job as an advertising copywriter. He has a wonderful woman who is in love with him despite his decision. He has a supportive agent and friend that has helped his career as a poet.

He blows it all on booze.

Perpetually living on 4s a week, watching the bugs crawl across the ceiling of his hovel, he sells something, has money, and … goes on a bender.

This is one story every writer and creative person should read BEFORE quitting their day job.
